Class Descriptions

SAT/PSAT Critical Reading
Students learn test-taking strategies applicable to this section of the SAT and PSAT, including critical thinking skills and time management strategies.  In addition, they learn how to interact with the reading passages to increase their reading comprehension and to help them remain focused on the task at hand.
Students practice on materials published by The College Board, the makers of the SAT and PSAT.

SAT/PSAT MATH
Students learn test-taking strategies applicable to this section of the SAT and PSAT.  In addition, they review algebra and geometry concepts targeted on the SAT and PSAT and practice on actual SAT and PSAT problems created by The College Board.

SAT/PAST WRITING
Students learn test-taking and time management strategies applicable to this section of the SAT and PSAT.  In addition, they review grammar concepts targeted on this test, learn to recognize errors in grammar, punctuation, usage, and sentence structure, and fine tune editing skills.  They examine sample SAT essays and have the opportunity to write 2 SAT essays and receive feedback on each based on the SAT writing rubric.  All practice materials are actual SATs published by The College Board.

SAT/PSAT Vocabulary
This activity-based course helps students master the words that most frequently appear on the SAT.  In addition to learning targeted words, they study affixes and root words and are challenged to transfer their knowledge of these to determine the meaning of new words.  This course will help students on both the critical reading and writing sections of the SAT and PSAT.   Students who want to continue to develop their vocabulary skills may opt to take this course more than once, as the word groups and lists change each session.

SAT/PSAT BOOT CAMP  (SUMMER ONLY)

Boot Camp Fee:  $525

TestWise SAT/PSAT Boot Camp provides students with 32 hours of intense preparation for the SAT and PSAT.  Each day during the 8-day course, students attend classes in critical reading, vocabulary, math, and writing.  In addition to learning test-taking strategies and time management tips, students review concepts that are targeted on the test in each subject area.

Students who will be juniors in the fall of 2011 will be eligible to take the PSAT to compete for National Merit Scholarship awards, and most juniors will take the SAT in the spring of 2012.  These students, along with 12th graders who plan to retest in October 2011 and 9th and 10th graders who want to get a jump start on their preparation for the PSAT and SAT, will benefit from this course.

In October and in April, boot campers will be invited to attend 3-hour review sessions prior to the administration of the October PSAT and SAT and the May SAT.

ACT

ACT Premier

This 16-hour course familiarizes students with the ACT format and teaches them strategies and time management skills to help them optimize scores. In addition, students review major concepts targeted on the language arts, math, reading, and science sections of the test and practice on actual ACT questions. Students also learn how to approach the "optional" essay section of the ACT, which is required by many colleges and universities.
The main difference between ACT Premier and ACT Basic Strategies is that students in ACT Premier have more opportunities to practice using the strategies that they have learned. They take a complete ACT, receive scores on each section and a composite score, and have the opportunity to ask questions about items they miss. This practice and discussion helps students identify weaknesses that they need to address before testing.
